Ekādaśī is the eleventh tithi (lunar day) of each pakṣa (fortnight). Two Ekādaśīs per month · 24 across the lunar year (occasionally 26 when there's an extra month). Vaiṣṇavas traditionally fast on these days · offering even food-restraint to Viṣṇu. Each Ekādaśī carries its own name and merit per the Bhāgavata-Purāṇa and Padma-Purāṇa.

The day of each Ekādaśī follows the Dharmasindhu's Ekādaśī-nirṇaya, computed on the Sūrya Siddhānta's sunrise and tithi at Ujjayinī: whether daśamī touches the sunrise (for Smārtas) or the aruṇodaya, the four ghaṭīs before it (for Vaiṣṇavas), and whether the ekādaśī and the dvādaśī run past the next sunrise. Smārta householders follow Mādhava, the present practice the text records. Who is Vaiṣṇava or Smārta is "by one's own tradition". Pāraṇā: within dvādaśī after its first quarter (hari-vāsara); in the first three muhūrtas when dvādaśī runs past madhyāhna; on trayodaśī when no dvādaśī remains. Times are IST at Ujjayinī.
