"Be my friend through these seven steps · let us walk dharma together · joined in this seven-step bond · let us rejoice in this dharma. (Saptapadī mantra · the binding 7-step vow)"

🪷 Vivāha · Rukmiṇī-Kalyāṇa · Krishna's archetypal marriage

Krishna's vivāha with Rukmiṇī is THE archetypal vaiṣṇava-marriage. Rukmiṇī secretly wrote to Krishna · pledging him alone. Krishna abducted her from Vidarbha on the day of her forced-betrothal to Śiśupāla · Bhāgavata 10.52-54 describes this rāsa-līlā prefiguration. Every Hindu vivāha invokes Rukmiṇī-Kalyāṇa as the supreme model.

Dharmic Purpose

To consecrate the union of two jīvas in dharma · to establish the gṛhastha-āśrama (the foundation of all other āśramas) · to commit to dharma, artha, kāma together — the three puruṣārthas of householder life, with mokṣa as the eventual fourth. Marriage is not contract but YAJÑA — a continuous sacrificial-offering of two lives to each other and to dharma.

Ritual Essence

Saptapadī (7 steps around the sacred fire) is the binding act · each step is sealed with a specific mantra invoking food, strength, prosperity, happiness, offspring, the seasons, and eternal friendship · the kanyādāna (gifting of the daughter), pāṇi-grahaṇa (taking of the hand), lāja-homa (offering of parched grain), and aśmārohaṇa (stepping on the stone for steadfastness) all together form the saṁskāra.

Modern Adaptation

Even in heavily-modernized contexts, the saptapadī, kanyādāna, and lāja-homa are preserved · the muhūrta is computed by jyotiṣis · gotras and family-paramparās are matched · pre-marriage horoscope-matching (kuṇḍalī-milāna with 36 aṣṭa-koota matching) is standard.

Jyotiṣa Considerations

EXTENSIVE — bride and groom kuṇḍalīs are matched on 36 aṣṭakūṭa-guṇas · 18+ is auspicious · Maṅgalika-doṣa, Kāla-sarpa-doṣa, Nāḍī-doṣa checked · the muhūrta-day requires extensive computation (see /samskara-muhurta) · prefer Rohiṇī, Mr̥gaśirā, Magha, Uttara-trayam, Hasta, Svātī, Anurādhā, Mūla, Revatī · avoid Tuesday, Saturday
