Saṁskāra #16 of 16 · The final rite — the cremation sacrament · stage: completion

"I sprinkle you, O Agni, with what is pleasing to you · may Agni-deva count this departed one's remaining lifespan, progeny, and cattle. O Agni, lead us by the good path to wealth — O knower of all paths, divine one."

🪷 Antyeṣṭi · Krishna's mahāprasthāna at Prabhāsa

Krishna's own antyeṣṭi was performed by Arjuna at Prabhāsa-tīrtha (now Somanāth, Gujarat) on 18 Feb 3102 BCE — the moment marking the start of Kali Yuga. The seven generations of Yādavas were consumed in the mauṣala-līlā. BG 8.5 anta-kāle ca mām eva smaran · remembering Krishna at the end of life is the supreme attainment.

BG 8.5 · "anta-kāle ca mām eva smaran" — remembering Me at the end

Dharmic Purpose

To consecrate the final transition of the jīva from the body · to offer the body back to the five elements (pañca-mahābhūtas) in the sacred fire · to enable the soul to take next-birth or attain mokṣa unencumbered · to honor the departed and console the family through structured ritual.

Canonical Timing

Performed immediately upon death (or as soon as possible) · the timing is determined by the moment of departure, not chosen · but auspicious vāra, tithi, and nakshatra are considered when possible

Ritual Essence

The body is bathed, anointed, dressed in fresh cloth · placed on a wooden bier · transported to the cremation-ground · the head is shaved on completion of life-of-this-body · the eldest son (or designated kartā) lights the funeral pyre at the head while reciting Agni-mantras · the soul is invoked to depart by the good path · the bones (asthi) are collected on the 3rd day and immersed in a sacred river · 13-day śrāddha-rituals follow.

Modern Adaptation

Even in modern times, antyeṣṭi at the cremation ground is preserved · the kartā lights the pyre · the mantra recitation is performed by family priest · for those without close-family, electric-crematorium can replace the wood-pyre while preserving the mantra-essence.

Jyotiṣa Considerations

Some traditions check the moment of death for śubha vs aśubha-nakshatra · pañchaka-doṣa is examined · if death occurs during Pañchaka (Dhaniṣṭhā-Revatī sequence), special remedial pañchaka-pūjā is performed · the kartā's natal chart is consulted for the proper śrāddha-time
