सरस्वति नमस्तुभ्यं वरदे कामरूपिणि। विद्यारम्भं करिष्यामि सिद्धिर्भवतु मे सदा।
"O Sarasvatī, bestower of boons, granter of desires, salutations to you. I commence the study of vidyā — may there always be siddhi (success) for me."

Dharmic Purpose

To formally begin the child's education · to invoke Sarasvatī (the goddess of vidyā) and Ganeśa (the remover of obstacles) before the first lesson · to recognize that all knowledge is sacred — saraswatī-rūpa.

Ritual Essence

The child sits before the family priest or guru · the priest holds the child's right hand and traces "ॐ" (Oṁ) in raw-rice or sand · the child then traces it themselves · Sarasvatī-mantra is recited · the first lesson (often the Sarasvatī-vandanā) is taught.

Modern Adaptation

Performed at home or in a temple · on Vasanta Pañcamī (Sarasvatī-Pūjā day) · child writes their first letter "ॐ" guided by parent/teacher · marks the start of formal schooling.
