Saṁskāra #11 of 16 · The sacred-thread investiture (initiation into Veda-study) · stage: student-life

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्।
"Oṁ. The Earth, the Atmosphere, the Heavens. May we meditate on the splendor of the divine Savitṛ; may He inspire our intellect. (Gāyatrī Mantra · Ṛg-Veda III.62.10)"

Dharmic Purpose

The SECOND BIRTH (dvija-janma) — the spiritual birth that justifies the title dvija ("twice-born"). The child receives the sacred thread (yajñopavīta) symbolizing connection to the three fires (gārhapatya, dakṣiṇāgni, āhavanīya) and the three Vedas. The Gāyatrī mantra is whispered into the right ear by the guru — this is the supreme initiation.

Canonical Timing

8th year for brāhmaṇa · 11th year for kṣatriya · 12th year for vaiśya (per Manu Smṛti II.36-37) · ideally before the 16th birthday

Ritual Essence

The boy is taken to the guru · head shaved (cūḍākarma reprised) · bathed · clothed in mr̥ga-carma or saffron cloth · the sacred thread (made of three strands × three) is placed over the left shoulder · the guru whispers the GĀYATRĪ MANTRA into the right ear · the boy receives the daṇḍa (staff) and bhikṣā-pātra (begging bowl) · vows of brahmacarya are taken · the boy now eats only what is given by alms or by the guru's household.

Modern Adaptation

Today the gurukula-residential aspect is rarely maintained · but the thread-ceremony and Gāyatrī-initiation are widely preserved · the boy then commits to sandhyā-vandana (twice-daily sandhyā with Gāyatrī) for life.

Jyotiṣa Considerations

Performed in the uttarāyaṇa (Jan-July) preferred · waxing moon · Sun in own/exalted sign · auspicious nakshatra (especially Hasta, Pūrva-Phalgunī, Uttara-Phalgunī, Citrā, Anurādhā, Śravaṇa)
