Dharmic Purpose
To formally begin the study of the Vedas under guru-guidance · the boy is no longer "child" but "brahmacāri-student" who lives by the upādhyāya-paramparā · this is the verse-by-verse, śloka-by-śloka transmission of dharmic memory across generations.
Canonical Timing
Performed shortly after upanayana · on Śrāvaṇa-Pūrṇimā (Upākarma) annually as renewal · the formal beginning of Veda-study under the guru

Ritual Essence
After upanayana, on the day of Vedārambha, the guru initiates the boy into the first mantra of the assigned Veda · the student commits to daily Veda-recitation · each year on Śrāvaṇa-Pūrṇimā the upākarma is renewed.
Modern Adaptation
In most modern families, Vedārambha is performed as part of a continuous upanayana ceremony · with the first mantra of Ṛg-Veda whispered by the guru · contemporary Sanskrit-pāṭhaśālās in India still observe the formal Vedārambha.
Jyotiṣa Considerations
Performed on Śrāvaṇa-Pūrṇimā · or on a day with Mercury or Jupiter in strong position · auspicious nakshatra (Punarvasu, Puṣya, Hasta, Śravaṇa)
