Dharmic Purpose
To open the ears (karṇa) for hearing dharma · acupuncture-medically also said to support auditory and ocular health · the ear is consecrated as the organ through which śruti (revealed scripture) enters · marks the child's readiness to hear the Veda.

Ritual Essence
The ears are pierced with a gold or silver needle by a goldsmith or kuladevatā-pūjārī · the Ṛg-Veda I.89.8 śānti-mantra ("bhadraṁ karṇebhiḥ śruṇuyāma devāḥ") is recited · the right ear first for males, left first for females.
Modern Adaptation
Often combined with traditional jewelry-giving · performed at a temple · while mantras are chanted · medical-grade sterile needles used today.
