Saṁskāra #9 of 16 · The ear-piercing rite · stage: childhood
🪷 Karṇa-vedha · Krishna's ear-piercing in Vraja
Krishna's karṇa-vedha was performed by Yaśodā with a gold-needle · the ear that hears the rāsa-līlā-flute first received its ornament here. Every Vraja-gopī's flute-pierced ears trace to Krishna's own karṇa-vedha.
— Bhāgavata 10.21-29 · the rāsa-līlā · where Krishna's flute-sound pierces every Gopī's ear
Dharmic Purpose
To open the ears (karṇa) for hearing dharma · acupuncture-medically also said to support auditory and ocular health · the ear is consecrated as the organ through which śruti (revealed scripture) enters · marks the child's readiness to hear the Veda.
Canonical Timing
3rd–5th year (some traditions earlier, in odd month) · auspicious day
