भद्रं कर्णेभिः शृणुयाम देवा भद्रं पश्येमाक्षभिर्यजत्राः।
"May we hear with our ears what is auspicious, O devas · may we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O worshipful ones (Ṛg-Veda I.89.8 · the universal śānti-mantra)."

Dharmic Purpose

To open the ears (karṇa) for hearing dharma · acupuncture-medically also said to support auditory and ocular health · the ear is consecrated as the organ through which śruti (revealed scripture) enters · marks the child's readiness to hear the Veda.

Ritual Essence

The ears are pierced with a gold or silver needle by a goldsmith or kuladevatā-pūjārī · the Ṛg-Veda I.89.8 śānti-mantra ("bhadraṁ karṇebhiḥ śruṇuyāma devāḥ") is recited · the right ear first for males, left first for females.

Modern Adaptation
