Saṁskāra #2 of 16 · The rite for healthy fetal development · stage: pre-natal

सुपर्णोऽसि गरुत्मांस्त्रिवृत्ते शिरो गायत्रं चक्षुर्बृहद्रथन्तरे पक्षौ।
"You are the eagle Garutmān · your head is threefold · gāyatra is your eye · bṛhad-rathantara are your wings — invocation for the protection of the developing embryo."

🪷 Puṁsavana · Devakī's puṁsavana ritual

Vasudeva-Devakī observed puṁsavana to bless the male-child entering the womb. The ritual celebrates the certainty that THIS conception is Krishna himself · the supreme male-puruṣa (BG 15.18 puruṣottamaḥ).

BG 15.18 · puruṣottamaḥ — the supreme puruṣa Krishna

Dharmic Purpose

To invoke divine protection for the developing fetus · to support healthy fetal development (especially of the spine and consciousness) · to recognize the third-month as the moment when the new-jīva fully enters the embodied form.

Canonical Timing

3rd month of pregnancy · before fetal movement is felt · auspicious nakshatra (especially Puṣya or Tiṣya · pulling-strength nakshatras)

Ritual Essence

Pressing of nyagrodha (banyan-fig) sap into the right nostril of the mother · invocation of Puṣya-nakshatra deities · saṅkalpa for the embryo's welfare.

Modern Adaptation

Today often replaced by mantra-japa (especially Saṅkaṭa-nāśana Gaṇeśa-stotra) during the 3rd month · saṅkalpa for child's welfare · medical prenatal-care integrated with mantra-shānti.

Jyotiṣa Considerations

Performed on Puṣya, Hasta, Aśvinī, Pūrva-Bhādrapadā nakshatras · avoid Rāhu-kālam · śukla-pakṣa preferred
