Saṁskāra #1 of 16 · The conception rite · stage: pre-natal

विष्णुर्योनिं कल्पयतु त्वष्टा रूपाणि पिंशतु। आ सिञ्चतु प्रजापतिर्धाता गर्भं दधातु ते॥
"May Viṣṇu prepare the womb · may Tvaṣṭā form the embodiment · may Prajāpati sprinkle the seed · may Dhātā establish the embryo in you."

Dharmic Purpose

To sanctify the act of conception itself — recognizing that what is being created is not "biological reproduction" but the WELCOMING of a jīva (with its own saṁskāras and prārabdha-karma) into a new body. The parents become host to a soul, not author of a child.

Canonical Timing

Performed on the night chosen for conception · 4th–16th day after menstruation · auspicious tithi (odd-day for son, even-day for daughter per traditional bīja-niyama) · favorable nakshatra · waxing moon preferred

Ritual Essence

Mantra-invocation to Viṣṇu, Tvaṣṭā, Prajāpati, Dhātā · offering of milk-and-ghee · meditation on the divinity of the act · the seed (bīja) and the field (kṣetra) both consecrated.

Modern Adaptation

When traditional ritual is not feasible, the essence is preserved by: (1) deliberate timing chosen with awareness, (2) prior mantra-japa for both partners, (3) recognition that the child being conceived is Krishna's aṁśa (BG 15.7 mamaivāṁśo), not their property.

Jyotiṣa Considerations

Avoid Bharaṇī, Mūla, Aśleṣā (gaṇḍānta-nakshatras) · prefer Rohiṇī, Hasta, Anurādhā, Uttara-trayam · avoid Tuesday and Saturday · waxing moon, śukla-pakṣa preferred
