श्रीमैत्रेयजी कहते हैं— विदुरजी! पृथ्वी आदि कार्यवर्गका जो सूक्ष्मतम अंश है—जिसका और विभाग नहीं हो सकता तथा जो कार्यरूपको प्राप्त नहीं हुआ है और जिसका अन्य परमाणुओंके साथ संयोग भी नहीं हुआ है उसे परमाणु कहते हैं। इन अनेक परमाणुओंके परस्पर मिलनेसे ही मनुष्योंको भ्रमवश उनके समुदायरूप एक अवयवीकी प्रतीति होती है॥ १॥
