Similarly, while awake one can see that his body is a product of the five material elements. Therefore it is to be understood that the actual self, the soul, is distinct from the body it observes and is unborn and immortal.

स्वप्नावस्थामें ऐसा मालूम होता है कि मेरा सिर कट गया है और मैं मर गया हूँ, मुझे लोग श्मशानमें जला रहे हैं; परन्तु ये सब शरीरकी ही अवस्थाएँ दीखती हैं, आत्माकी नहीं। देखनेवाला तो उन अवस्थाओंसे सर्वथा परे, जन्म और मृत्युसे रहित, शुद्ध-बुद्ध परमतत्त्वस्वरूप है॥ ४॥
