करोति कर्म क्रियते च जन्तु: केनाप्यसौ चोदित आनिपातात् । न तत्र विद्वान् प्रकृतौ स्थितोऽपि निवृत्ततृष्ण: स्वसुखानुभूत्या ॥ ३० ॥

Transliteration

karoti karma kriyate ca jantuḥ kenāpy asau codita ā-nipātāt na tatra vidvān prakṛtau sthito ’pi nivṛtta-tṛṣṇaḥ sva-sukhānubhūtyā
Synonyms
karoti — he performs; karma — material work; kriyate — is acted upon; ca — also; jantuḥ — the living entity; kena api — by some force or other; asau — he; coditaḥ — impelled; ā-nipātāt — up to the point of death; na — not; tatra — there; vidvān — a wise person; prakṛtau — in material nature; sthitaḥ — situated; api — even though; nivṛtta — having given up; tṛṣṇaḥ — material desire; sva — by his own; sukha — of happiness; anubhūtyā — experience.

Translation

An ordinary living entity performs material work and is transformed by the reaction to such work. Thus he is driven by various desires to continue working fruitively up to the very moment of his death. A wise person, however, having experienced his own constitutional bliss, gives up all material desires and does not engage in fruitive work.

हिन्दी टीका-पाठ

उद्धवजी! जैसे भलीभाँति चिकित्सा न करनेपर रोगका समूल नाश नहीं होता, वह बार-बार उभरकर मनुष्यको सताया करता है; वैसे ही जिस मनकी वासनाएँ और कर्मोंके संस्कार मिट नहीं गये हैं, जो स्त्री-पुत्र आदिमें आसक्त है, वह बार-बार अधूरे योगीको बेधता रहता है और उसे कई बार योगभ्रष्ट भी कर देता है॥ २८॥ देवताओंके द्वारा प्रेरित शिष्य-पुत्र आदिके द्वारा किये हुए विघ्नोंसे यदि कदाचित् अधूरा योगी मार्गच्युत हो जाय तो भी वह अपने पूर्वाभ्यासके कारण पुन: योगाभ्यासमें ही लग जाता है। कर्म आदिमें उसकी प्रवृत्ति नहीं होती॥ २९॥ उद्धवजी! जीव संस्कार आदिसे प्रेरित होकर जन्मसे लेकर मृत्युपर्यन्त कर्ममें ही लगा रहता है और उनमें इष्ट-अनिष्ट-बुद्धि करके हर्ष-विषाद आदि विकारोंको प्राप्त होता रहता है। परन्तु जो तत्त्वका साक्षात्कार कर लेता है, वह प्रकृतिमें स्थित रहनेपर भी संस्कारा-नुसार कर्म होते रहनेपर भी उनमें इष्ट-अनिष्ट-बुद्धि करके हर्ष-विषाद आदि विकारोंसे युक्त नहीं होता; क्योंकि आनन्दस्वरूप आत्माके साक्षात्कारसे उसकी संसारसम्बन्धी सभी आशा-तृष्णाएँ पहले ही नष्ट हो चुकी होती हैं॥ ३०॥
