18.62 तम् to Him? एव even? शरणम् गच्छ take refuge? सर्वभावेन with all thy being? भारत O Bharata? तत्प्रसादात् by His grace? पराम् supreme? शान्तिम् peace? स्थानम् the abode? प्राप्स्यसि (thou) shalt obtain? शाश्वतम् eternal.Commentary Do total and perfect surrender to the Lord. Do not keep any secret desires for silent gratification. Desire and egoism are the two chief obstacles that stand in the way of selfsurrender. Kill them ruthlessly.Run to the Lord for shelter with all thy being for freeing thyself from the troubles? afflictions and sorrows of Samsara. Take the Lord as the sole refuge. Then by His grace? thou shalt obtain supreme peace and attain to the supreme? eternal Abode.

18.62 Gaccha saranam, take refuge; tam eva, in Him, the Lord alone; sarva-bhavena, with your whole being, for getting rid of your mundane sufferings, O scion of the Bharata dynasty. Tat-prasadat, through His grace, through God's grace; prapsyasi, you will attain; param, the supreme; santim, Peace, the highest Tranillity; and the sasvatam, eternal; sthanam, Abode, the supreme State of Mine who am Visnu.

18.62 Such being the case, take refuge with all your heart (Sarvabhavena), by every disposition of your body, senses and mind (Sarvatmana) in Him - Him, the ruler of all, who has become your charioteer out of compassion for dependents, and who orders you, 'Act thus' and so on. Even if you do not do so now, fighting in battle etc., is inevitable for you who are ignorant and actuated by His Maya, but then you will get ruined. Therefore, fight etc., in the manner which has been explained by Him. Such is the meaning. Acting in this way, you will attain supreme peace, release from all bondage, and the eternal abode. Hundreds of Srutis declare it: 'That supreme place of Visnu which the sages see' (Rg. S., 1.2.6.5); 'They become meritorious and reach this heaven where Devas and Sadhyas dwell' (Tai. A., 3.12); 'Where dwell the ancient sages, the first-born' (Tai.Sam., 4.7.13.1); 'The supreme place above the paradise in the heart of the Supreme Heaven' (Ma. Na., 8.14); 'He who is in the Supreme Heaven and presides over this' (Rg. S., 8.7.17.7); 'Now that light which shines above this Supreme Heaven' (Cha. U., 3.13.7); and 'He reaches the end of the journey, the Highest abode of Visnu' (Ka. U., 3.9).

18.61-62 Isvarah etc. Tam eva etc. This Lord, the Supreme Self, must be taken hold of as refuge. When that Supreme Ruler, the [real] Agent-of-all-actions, the [real] Knower, the very Self of your own, is reflected upon, there (in the heart) the [effects of] actions do not enjoy any locus standi. Indeed, the deer-calves which are of wavering mind [by nature] and are noted only for their power of running away to escape, do not take recourse to their skill in pursuing freely their [usual] activities while there dwells in the [nearby] cave a loin-calf, the glory of whose valour has been made evident by the accessories in the form of the heaps of pearls scattered from the elephants' temples broken upon with the very sharp edges of his (lion-calf's) excellent claws. By the cocluding statement that commences 'To Him alone you must go for refuge' and [runs] as 'Through My Grace etc.', the Bhagavat indicates the Lord Supreme Self, and Vasudeva krsna to be identical.

।।18.62।। ईशावास्योपनिषद् के प्रथम मन्त्र का भावार्थ यह है कि यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् ईश्वर से व्याप्त है। इसलिए? नामरूपों के भेद से दृष्टि हटाकर अनन्त परमात्मा का आनन्दानुभव करो किसी के धन का लोभ मत करो। गीतादर्शन का सारतत्त्व भी यही है। अहंकार का त्याग करके अपने कर्त्तव्य करो यह तो मानो गीता का मूल मंत्र ही है। आत्मा और अनात्मा के मिथ्या सम्बन्ध से ही कर्तृत्वाभिमानी जीव की उत्पत्ति होती है। यह जीव ही संसार के दुखों को भोगता रहता है। अत? इससे अपनी मुक्ति के लिए अहंकार का परित्याग करना चाहिए। यहाँ प्रश्न उपस्थित हो सकता है कि अहंकार का त्याग कैसे करें इसके उत्तर में ईश्वरार्पण की भावना का वर्णन किया गया है। पूर्वश्लोक में ही ईश्वर के स्वरूप को दर्शाया गया है। इसलिए? अब? भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन से कहते हैं? तुम उसी हृदयस्थ ईश्वर की शरण में जाओ।शरण में जाने का अर्थ है अभिमान एवं फलासक्ति का त्याग करके? कर्माध्यक्षकर्मफलदाता ईश्वर का सतत स्मरण करते हुए कर्म करना। इसके फलस्वरूप चित्त की शुद्धि प्राप्त होगी? जो आत्मज्ञान में सहायक होगी। आत्मज्ञान की दृष्टि से शरण का अर्थ होगा समस्त अनात्म उपाधियों के तादात्म्य को त्यागकर आत्मस्वरूप ईश्वर के साथ एकत्व का अनुभव करना। यह शरणागति अपने सम्पूर्ण व्यक्तित्व के साथ ही हो सकती है (सर्वभावेन)? अधूरे हृदय से नहीं। राधा? हनुमान और प्रह्लाद जैसे भक्त इसके उदाहरण हैं।चित्त की शुद्धि और आत्मानुभूति ही ईश्वर की कृपा अथवा प्रसाद है। जिस मात्रा में? अनात्मा के साथ हमारा तादात्म्य निवृत्त होगा? उसी मात्रा में हमें ईश्वर का यह प्रसाद प्राप्त होगा।भारत भरतवंश में जन्म लेने के कारण अर्जुन का नाम भारत था। शब्द व्युत्पत्ति के अनुसार इसका अर्थ है वह पुरुष जो भा अर्थात् प्रकाश (ज्ञान) में रत है। आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान के प्रकाश में रमने वाले ऋषियों के कारण ही यह देश भारत कहा गया है।प्रकरण का उपसंहार करते हुए भगवान् कहते हैं
