Vedic Story
Anant means infinite and Shesha means remainder! Shesha was born to sage Kashyap and his wife Kadhru. Kadhru means reddish brown. Kadhru gave birth to thousands of snakes out of which Shesha was the eldest. Many of Shesha’s broth-ers were cruel and were inflicting harm to others. Shesha was disgusted by the cruel acts of his brothers, so he left his mother and other relatives. He lived on air and meditated in places including Gandhamadhana, Badhrikashrama, Gokarna, Pushkara, and Himalaya. His penances were so severe that his flesh skin and muscles dried up to merge into his frame. Brahma convinced Shesha’s penance ked Shesha to request a boon.

Shesha asked that he shall be able to keep his mind under control so that he can continue to perform penances. Brahma accepted the request and asked him for a favour. Brahma requested Shesha to go beneath the earth and stabilize it. Shesha is known to support earth even today.
