The Couplets

कहेउ राम बियोग तव सीता। मो कहुँ सकल भए बिपरीता।।
Rama said, “O Sita, due to separation from you, everything has become adverse for me.”

नव तरु किसलय मनहुँ कृसानू। कालनिसा सम निसि ससि भानू।।
“The fresh sprouts seem emaciated. The night and the moon appear like the night of destruction.”

कुबलय बिपिन कुंत बन सरिसा। बारिद तपत तेल जनु बरिसा।।
“The groves of blossoming flowers resemble the forest of spears. The rain seems like a shower of hot oil.”

जे हित रहे करत तेइ पीरा। उरग स्वास सम त्रिबिध समीरा।।
“Those who were once sources of joy now cause pain. The three winds feel like the breath of serpents.”

In these heart-wrenching verses, Lord Rama expresses His anguish due to separation from Sita. Everything has become adverse for Him, and the world around Him has lost its beauty and joy. The fresh sprouts seem emaciated, the night and moon appear like the night of destruction, the groves of blossoming flowers resemble a forest of spears, and the rain feels like a shower of hot oil. Even the winds, once sources of joy, now cause pain, feeling like the breath of serpents.

The Couplets

कहेहू तें कछु दुख घटि होई। काहि कहौं यह जान न कोई।।
“If I were to express my sorrow, it would only increase. Why should I speak of it, for no one knows it.”

तत्व प्रेम कर मम अरु तोरा। जानत प्रिया एकु मनु मोरा।।
“The essence of my love and yours, O beloved, is known only to my one mind.”

सो मनु सदा रहत तोहि पाहीं। जानु प्रीति रसु एतेनहि माहीं।।
“That mind always remains with you. Know that the essence of love lies in this alone.”

In these verses, Lord Rama expresses the depth of His love for Sita, stating that if He were to express His sorrow, it would only increase, for no one truly knows the extent of His anguish. He declares that the essence of His love and Sita’s love is known only to His one mind, which always remains with her. The essence of love, He says, lies in this alone.

The Couplets

प्रभु संदेसु सुनत बैदेही। मगन प्रेम तन सुधि नहिं तेही।।
Hearing the Lord’s message, Sita became immersed in love, losing awareness of her body.

कह कपि हृदयँ धीर धरु माता। सुमिरु राम सेवक सुखदाता।।
Hanuman said, “O Mother, have patience in your heart. Remember Rama, the giver of joy to His servants.”

उर आनहु रघुपति प्रभुताई। सुनि मम बचन तजहु कदराई।।
“Bring the glory of the Lord of the Raghus into your heart. Hearing my words, abandon your sorrow.”

Upon hearing Lord Rama’s message, Sita became immersed in love, losing awareness of her body. Hanuman then urged her to have patience in her heart and remember Lord Rama, the giver of joy to His servants. He asked her to bring the glory of the Lord of the Raghus into her heart and abandon her sorrow upon hearing his words.

The Couplet

निसिचर निकर पतंग सम रघुपति बान कृसानु।
जननी हृदयँ धीर धरु जरे निसाचर जानु।।15।।

“The hordes of demons are like moths, and the arrows of the Lord of the Raghus are like the sun’s rays. O Mother, have patience in your heart, for the demons shall be burned.”

In the final couplet, Hanuman compares the hordes of demons to moths and Lord Rama’s arrows to the sun’s rays, assuring Sita that the demons will be burned. He urges her to have patience in her heart, for the demons’ destruction is imminent.

Through this poignant passage, Tulsidas masterfully captures Lord Rama’s anguish and the depth of His love for Sita, as well as Hanuman’s compassionate efforts to console and reassure her, reminding her of Lord Rama’s glory and the impending defeat of the demons.
